You might have a camera lying around that has an expired warranty that you could use for this. Canon will not fix any issues with Magic Lantern crashing your camera. The most important thing you should know is that the use of Magic Lantern will void the warranty on your camera.

MAGIC LANTERN CANON 10D UPDATE
You download the ‘firmware’ update to your memory card, plug it into your camera, and let Magic Lantern do its thing. Not noticing any difference between boot up or focus speed.Magic Lantern is software that you add to your camera. I just tried booting my 7D without ML by holding down the SET button. In any case, if for any reason you don't like ML just format the card or use a different card and you're back to Canon firmware 1.1 I can't wait for beta when all features are implemented. Not a bad tradeoff - one second more when turning on camera for loads of incredible new features for stills, video, audio. It's not so much slowing down the camera as inserting delays that can be annoying. Touching any button without ML results in instant wake up while with ML loaded there is at least a second delay. To be more specific regarding the 7D, ML adds some time to both booting up the camera and when waking the camera from "sleep" mode. Maybe somebody else can have a better answer for the 70D. It could be the 70D won't notice it - and ML has made many improvements over the last couple of years. Kind of odd with all the threads for ML here, and I don't remember anybody saying it slowed down their camera until now! Where I thought I noticed it was (obviously) menu read speed/selection and AF performance (frame rate seemed the same - terrible). Of course, I figured it was because "60D", but if the 7D got slowed down with Dual DIGIC 4, then there's obviously a bit of drain. Up above trulandphoto said he noticed a performance change on his 7D, and I thought the same for my 60D. There is no down side unless you are afraid something will happen to your camera, which is highly unlikely.
MAGIC LANTERN CANON 10D MANUAL
I use one-push zoom, auto dot tune, focus peaking for manual focus right now, will use more photo, video and audio features as they are added. I don't think there is much risk, but that's up to you. It takes two minutes to install, though not all features are ready yet. It's in Alpha right now - that's one before Beta. Most recently have been doing without.īut have decided to sell some lenses and one of my 7D bodies to fund a 7DII in any case.Īs for my 70D? I wouldn't consider loading ML on it. I've been using it on a 7D on and off for the exposure bracketing options but it definitely does slow down that camera. But I've simply not had the time or the inclination to give it a shot. (that's what the forum is good for) But you might very well find some things that will improve your photography or video, in which case it's worth the time spent.Ĭertainly, there's some neat things I'd like to try out still - such as the dual ISO. ML's website is terrible to navigate - and finding particulars can be difficult at best. Navigating the new menus requires a bit of dedication and a lot of reading. Really, all there is to it is having a spare SD card, and sticking it on. Or a built in intervalometer has been on your wishlist for years.Īnd really, there are some neat features such as the trap focus or the ability to customize your focus points, as well as dot tune being built in (although I've not used that version). You might very well find that some of the metering and exposure features have been something you've wanted for a long time. I would recommend taking a look at the photo and video features, and see if there's something that seems to be worth changing your entire menu system for to begin with. But there hasn't been anything I've found I couldn't live with. The 70D in particular overcame so many things that the 60D couldn't do - and a lot of the additional video features that ML has sort of made up for these shortcomings. Even though I could be running it on my 6D and 70D I've not found a compelling feature to go that way.Ĭertainly, there's some neat things I'd like to try out still - such as the dual ISO. You know it's weird, but I was all excited about ML when I had my 60D, and I don't touch it now. The version of ML that's out now is fine for the 70D. On that note, is ML worth downloading onto the 70D? Thanks. Has anyone downloaded the ML for the Canon 70D? I know it recently was released, so I don't know if it's been tested and updated enough to risk it.
